| In the not too distant future, a team of scientists and engineers are on a daring mission to take an up-close look at a comet as it streaks its way across the galaxy. Their goal is to plot a successful course to rendezvous with the comet and launch a probe to collect scientific data. What seems at first to be a routine exploration is filled with challenges. Each obstacle that stands in the way of a successful mission requires the crew to work together as a team and problem solve the solution. |

ADDITIONAL MISSION INFORMATION
Pre-Visit Preparation
To prepare for mission day, teachers attend a mission preparation workshop at the Challenger Learning Center New Mexico. There they receive training and preparatory materials for student classroom activities that build teamwork and communication and help students understand the mission theme. To engage all students, the activities are interdisciplinary. The workshop will enable the teachers to incorporate the activities into their classrooms spanning a period of 4 – 8 weeks.
Participating in the Mission
When students arrive at the Challenger Learning Center, a short briefing is held in which students review the mission objectives and their team assignments. The class is divided into two groups, one working as controllers in Mission Control and the other working aboard the spacecraft. Students are assigned to one of eight mirrored teams at each location: Medical, Isolation, Probe, Navigation, Remote, Life Support, Communications, and Data. At the conclusion of each successful mission, the crew’s mission patch is placed on the wall of honor.
Post Visit – The Learning Goes On
Back at school, specific programs extend the Challenger Learning Center experience. Students analyze and reflect on the data gathered during the mission. They conduct post-flight briefings, news conferences, and other activities to transfer what they have learned into the everyday world of their classroom and school. Regardless of a student’s cultural background, economic situation, gender, learning style, or academic level, every Challenger Learning Center simulation provides students with an opportunity to succeed. Students leave with a renewed spirit of camaraderie, boosted self-esteem, and a desire to explore and learn. |
